In the history of the state of Iowa, since it was first explored by the French, it was held by the Spanish, again by the French. It was a part of the Louisiana Purchase. In rapid succession it was a part of Indian territory, Louisiana territory, Missouri territory, the unorganized territory, Michigan territory, Wisconsin territory and Iowa territory. Iowa was admitted to the union December 26, 1846
