79. MALTA.-Is the chief of the Maltese Is-
lands and located in the Mediterranean sea. It
is an important strategic point in the
sea. The
Island anciently belonged to the Phoenicians and
later to the Romans. It was the scene of the
shipwreck of St. Paul. The islands were con-
quered by Bonaparte in 1798 and were taken
by the English in 1800, their possession being
confirmed by treaty in 1841. At the present
time it is an English colony being administered
by a governor with an executive council.
