• The dining room is modeled after the deck
of the flagship of Columbus, the "Santa
Maria," the first ship to cast anchor on the
Western Hemisphere.
• Wall decorations represent the harbor of
New Orleans in the days of the American
clipper ships.
• It is of interest to note that the heavy oaken
timbers of the ship are probably the actual
timbers in the warehouse of Enrico Tonti, who
in 1695 established the beginning of the port
of Chicago.
• This great warehouse built by Tonti on the
north bank of the river was the actual begin-
ning of Chicago, the first house of commerce.
• Tonti's warehouse was a house in every
sense. It housed the first glad social gather-
ings. It housed the men whose mission was
of peace.
It housed men of letters and it
housed the seat of justice and law and held
a frontier as a nation grew.
