Originated with the Daimios who took over the
vast landed estates from the Samurai. The purpose
which they first served was that of lookout towers:
They were either 3 or 5 stories in height with
outside galleries completely around each story.
The Pagodas were erected on the highest point
of the estate thus enabling the owner to command
a view of his entire domain. Since the days of
the Empire, Pagodas have been used to preserve
something of ancient Japan and are now for the
most part set up in gardens and elsewhere
ornaments.
