Runic inscription on Dighton Rock. This picture shows the curious characters on the celebrated rock in Taunton River which antiquarians on both sides of the Atlantic have studied with the deepest interest. They are the memorial of the Norse Vikings, who, from Icelandic records, are shown to have discovered New England in the Tenth Century. Following previous voyagers, AD 1007 Thorfinn, with three ships, sailed down from Greenland, passing Kialarness (Cape Cod) and entering Straumfiord. The company wintered near Mount Hope, in 1008, when, it is believed, these hieroglyphics were inscribed. A part of this inscription has been translate by Prof. Rafin, the distinguished Runic scholar: - "Thorfinn, with 151 men took possession of this country." The Park takes its name from this rock
