The Hawaiian canoes are hollowed out of
a single tree having strips of hard wood sewed
on the upper edge of the canoe on each side,
closing over the top at both stem and stern.
The canoes are steadied by an out-rigger or
Ama, a slender log of light wood parallel to the
canoe and fastened to it by cruve cross-pieces
or Iako. Canoe surf riding is unsurpassed in
the Hawaiian Islands. Tourists are taken in
these surf riding canoes at Waikiki near
