MADE IN U. S. A
Mac-o-chee Castle was the home of the late Col. Don
Piatt who was born 1819 and died 1891. This beautiful
and unusual structure which has been visited by many
thousands was erected by Col. Piatt in 1879 at a cost
of $85,000. Col. Don Piatt was an outstanding figure
during his time; serving his countrymen as author,
jurist, diplomat, statesman, journalist and past grand
master of satire. He enlisted as a private in the
Union Army during the Civil War, being advanced
to Lt. Colonel and later becoming Judge Advocate of
military court.
Mr. Piatt retired to private life in 1879 when he built
the Castle and devoted his time to writing various
books of prose and poetry, besides doing much enter-
taining; among his guests were James Whitcomb Riley,
Francis Bret Harte, Tom Corwin and many other bright
lights in the literary and political world. Ryan and
Randal in their history of Ohio say "Don Piatt of
Mac-o-chee, one of Ohio's most original, daring and
picturesque political characters. His bold and aggressive
course as lawyer, diplomat and partisan editor made
him conspicuous during a long and varied career, in
which he acted a brilliant though somewhat eccentris
