Locomotives and cars from over the
ILLINOIS CENTRAL
entire Illinois Central System are
brought to these mammoth Paducah
shops for rebuilding, remodeling and repairing.
The huge plant begun in 1925 and covering
110 acres when completed cost $8,500,000, and
is Paducah's largest single industry. There are
16 miles of railroad track within the shop and
premises, 15 cranes, some large enough to lift
a giant locomotive like a toy. 24 oil storage
tanks with a capacity of 192,000 gallons and ma-
chine tools varying from tiny presses to monsters
weighing 2100 tons.
