Business Section, looking west from Mississippi River Levee,
NEW MADRID, MISSOURI. This was the first American town in
Missouri. It was founded 1798 by George Morgan. Named for
Madrid Spain it was an important river port and trade center
in early days. French and American settlers contributed to the
growth of the town and a Catholic Church was founded here
in 1789. This section figured prominently in the "New Madrid
Earthquake" of Dec. 1811 which formed Reelfoot Lake across
the river in West Tennessee.
