| Used from 1875 to 1909 for burial of prisoners, many of whom died violent deaths under the stern discipline of the old prison system. Exposure to the extreme desert temperatures that sometimes reached 130 degrees led may to insanity and death. Tower guards took their toll, too, when desperate inmates sought to escape through the main prison gate. |
