The North Petrified Forest was discovered by
John Muir in 1906 and many finely preserved
Sigillaria trees with their peculiar roots and
leafmarks show plainly that in this place
flourished one of the noblest forests of the
Carboniferous Period. The trees grew where they
now lie and there are many standing stumps
visible. This forest is famed for its basin, the
north wall of which is sculptured like the Grand
Canyon.
