During the Battle of Springfield in the
American Revolution this church was sub-
jected to heavy fire and is known all over
the country as the church of the militant
parson, James Caldwell, who during a short-
age of gun wadding ran out with hymnals
and uttered his famous remark, "Give 'em
Watts, boys!"
