WEST CONFEDERATE AVENUE, LOOKING
NORTH. Confederate Avenue, with its memorial tablets
and mounted guns that mark both Union and Confederate
batteries, bears mute testimony of the struggle for supremacy
that waged here in July, 1863. It was here the Confederate
column formed and began its advance on that final charge
led by Pickett, so sublime in its daring, so tragic in its fate.
