THE HUGH C.LEIGHTON CO.,MANUFACTURERS, PORTLAND ME.,U.S.A.PRINTED IN FRANKFORT MAIN, GERMANY 1905
PHILADELPHIA POST OFFICE. Northwest
corner of Chestnut and 9th Streets, a four-storied structure
of stone, in Renaissance style of architecture, with a dome of
iron. Its cost was $4,000,000. This building contains also
the United States Courts and Federal offices. Philadelphia
was the first city arranged on the now popular checkerboard
plan; a few irregular avenues only, formerly country roads,
deflect from the strict straight-away course.
