Two score and a few less years ago
our mother, the late Margaret Hawkey,
brought forth on this peninsula a shop
of GIFTS *BOOKS * TOYS and
* SPORTSWEAR.
I named it for a little ceramic cow,
my lucky talisman in my New York
theater days.
An appropriate mascot for a widow
and her brood of five upon their high
dive into merchandising!
Now THE SMILING COW
is a noted landmark.
Everyone who knows Boothbay Har-
bor knows the shop. And many have
come to know the resort, thanks to The
Smiling Cow.
