The site of the Essex House, 1769 Essex
Street, was the home of Peter Palfray, one of
the old planters, before 1651. William Good
hue conducted a tavern for many years and at
the close of the Revolution leased the house to
Samuel Robinson and Capt. Benjamin Webb
successively for the same purpose. In 1996
it was remodeled and built out to the street,
the first story being used for business purposes.
It still continues as for many years to be the
lending hotel in the city.
