Be Prepared! This is the Motto of the Boy Scouts of America. The above motto applied to this subject shows what a Boy Scout has been taught to do in case of lack of matches, and where a fire is necessary. A shoe lace, a narrow strip of wood (about 27" long) and a block of wood - with these he makes a drill and fire board and proceeds to make a fire by friction. It has been stated, upon good authority, that a scout has started a fire by this method in thirty-one seconds. This is only one of the many accomplishments taught the Boy Scouts of America.
