THE ENCHANTED MESA, New Mexico NM-6
Called "Katzimo" by the Acomas
(Indian for Enchanted)
Standing 430 feet above the windswept plain is
this golden brown sandstone pinnacle. The Acoma
Indians have a legend that this Mesa was once the
home of their ancestors - but the entrance was closed
by an earthquake while they were at work in the fields
below and they were never able to return to their
homes.
Even today it is not possible to climb to the top
of the Mesa without the aid of mechanical apparatus
and only the most experienced climbers should at-
tempt the ascent.
