Globe, the seat of Gila County, pop. about
10,000; was founded in 1876 as a rip-roaring
silver-strike boom town. Later rich copper
deposits were uncovered and the Old Dominion
Mine and many smaller ones made it hum. It
took its name from a globe-shaped boulder
of almost pure silver found on the San Carlos
Apache Indian reservation nearby.
