BENT'S FORT on the Arkansas River was
the most important trading post in pre-settle-
ment Colorado. It gathered the furs from the
mountains, the buffalo robes from the plains,
and participated in the caravan traffic over
the Santa Fe Trail. During the Mexican War
period, shown here, it served as supply depot
and hospital.
