RATON TUNNEL, the highest point on the
Santa Fe. Altitude 7,622 feet. The tunnel at
Raton Pass is 15 miles beyond Trinidad. The
track follows the Old Santa Fe Trail, which is
one of the oldest human pathways found on this
continent. The grade up the pass is remarkably
steep; two powerful mountain engines are re-
quired to haul the train on the upward climb.
From the car window one may see an endless
variety of mountain views. The Santa Fe has
recently completed a second tunnel consider-
ably below the original tunnel.
