No. 20.
A battery of three-inch field pieces. The most
effective and satisfactory type of mobile artil-
lery. Although our equipment of this type of
gun is not extensive at present, the Government
is working night and day in order to equip the
many new regiments which are being formed,
and additional cavalry regiments which are be-
ing changed into field artillery. To the left of
each gun is the caisson or ammunition wagon.
The horses, which are hitched to the limbers or
the front wheels of both the gun and of the
caisson, are sent back in the rear to some place
where they will be secure from observation. It
only takes a minute and a half for the pieces
to come in position, unlimber, prepare for ac-
tion and be ready to fire the first shot.
