34. WOMEN KILL HIPPOPOTAMI. The Kavir-
ondo women are as brave hunters as the men. This
picture shows four of them all ready to kill a hippo-
potamus. Hunting this animal is very dangerous and
requires a great deal of skill. For some reason, prob-
ably of a religious nature, they cover their bodies with
ground-nut oil and ocher, paint hideous designs on
their faces and wear headdresses ornamented with
wild boar teeth. The spears used are often poisoned.
