31. TO KILL A HIPPOPOTAMUS. This picture
gives a fine idea of the hippopotamus' powerful jaws,
which can easily bite a crocodile or a man right in
two. In order to kill one of these monsters instantly
it is necessary to pierce their small brain, weighing
less than two pounds, with a high power solid nosed
bullet, shooting through the eye or right under the
ear. The hunting is done from rafts, as the hippo
will often crush a boat in its jaws or throw the hunt-
ers into the water, where they are likely to be de-
voured by crocodiles. The natives kill the hippopotami
with poisoned spears.
