JOHANN WOLFGANG GOETHE
Born 1749- Died 1832
Johann Wolfgang Goethe was the greatest German poet. He is to be
compared with Homer of the Greeks, Dante of the Italians, Shakespeare
of the English. His greatest work is the drama "Faust."
He was born in Frankfurt on the Main, in the house pictured on this
card. It is a large stately house, and in it is the Goethe Museum.
There is a "Goethe house in Weimar also, where the poet died.
The room is very simple-a bed, wash-stand, a large chair. On the bed
lies a laurel wreath, and over the chair in which he died hangs another.
Goethe's shorter poems are pearls of German poetry. Some of the
well-known are "Little Heath Rose," "Elf King," "Mignon," " Wan-
derer's Night Song.

father wanted him to study law, and sent him to Universities of Leipzig
and Strassburg. He had friendship with Schiller, and was called
"Child of Good Fortune." His life was long-83 years.
