The "Old Abbey," so called from a fancied
resemblance to a place described in a novel. Built
about 1740 and one of the oldest houses in Leo-
minster. Originally a very large house and a noted
tavern on the old turnpike road. At one time was
one of the "underground railroad stations" for
secretly transporting slaves north.
