Additional Details:
The first structure was erected in 1791 by the Spanish but has always been called The French Market. This building was destroyed by a hurricane in 1812. It was rebuilt in 1813, when the meat market was added. The portion standing north of Dumaine Street is almost in its original state, with heavy brick columns. Even today, one may hear the speech of many lands, although Italians have almost superceded the old French Market Folk.
