THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA was
founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin as a
charitable school. At the conclusion of the
Revolution, a new charter was given by the
State and the present title was assumed in
1791.
In 1875 the University was moved to the
present extensive grounds west of the Schuyl-
kill River where some thirty buildings have
been erected and are constantly being added
to.
