Back:
Tom Sawyer whitewashing the fence as ordered
by Aunt Polly. He pretends to enjoy it so much
that Ben Rogers gives him his apple to let him
whitewash awhile. Other boys gather and pay Tom
with their treasures, such as doorknobs and dead
rats, while Tom sits idly by giving directions. Aunt
Polly is amazed and lets Tom go to play, thinking
he has done all the painting. The episode, as
written by Mark Twain, has become the most famous
in a boy's book in any language. The Post Office
has commemorated it in a stamp issued October 13,
1972. Norman Rockwell, the great artist-illustrator,
painted the original.
