THE H. SOPHIE NEWCOME MEMORIAL
COLLEGE for young women founded in 1986 the female
department of Tulane University. It was geny Mrs.
Josephine Louise Newcomb in memory of her daughter, whose
name it bears. Mrs Newcomb irst presented $450,000 to the
college, and at her death in 1900, bequeathed it her vast estate.
The library contains about 10,000 volumes.
