THE TELFAIR ACADEMY OF ARTS AND
SCIENCES, on President Street, was opened in 1885, just
a century after Edward Telfair was elected governor of Georgia.
It is the finest art school in the south, and was founded
through the bequest of Miss Mary Telfair, who willed $100,000
and the family mansion for the purpose. The building is
devoted to rare collections of pictures, statuary and objects
of virtue.
