While in search of the Fountain of Youth, Juan Ponce
de Leon and his companions visited Wakulla Springs both
in 1513 and 1521 On his second visit Ponce de Leon was
wounded by an arrow in an attack by Indians. He was
taken to Cuba, where he died shortly after from the effects
of this wound. The blood-stained arrow with which he was
supposedly shot is in the permanent collection at the
Lodge. The adjacent area is rich in historical lore and ruins
of old Spanish and English forts may still be seen on the
Wakulla River
