The Wellesley College Seal
MINISTRARE
HE words on the open book, Incipit vita
nova (Here beginneth new life), from
Dante's Vita Nuova, were used by Henry
Fowle Durant, the founder, as the theme of his
talks on the Spirit of Wellesley. The "cross
crosslet" symbolizes the Christian Idea; the "two
fountains," truth and knowledge; the "azure
field," the waters of Lake Waban-hence the
college color, blue.
The coat of arms was incorporated in the
seal in 1917. The original seal bore the motto,
Non Ministrari sed Ministrare, and the
date of the opening of the College, 1875.
