U.S.S. GEORGE WASHINGTON
The world's first fleet ballistic missile submarine is
shown sliding into the Thames River from her
building ways at General Dynamics Corporation's
Electric Boat Division, Groton, Conn. George
Washington is capable of firing the Polaris 1,500-
mile ballistic missile from submerged positions at
sea. Washington incorporates latest technical ad-
vances in nuclear power, and inertial navigation,
with a shark-shaped hull design.
