DOWNY WOODPECKER (Dryobates pubescens medianus)
A most welcome little bird, he is one of our smallest woodpeckers, averaging about six
inches in length. An undeniably handsome follow, he feeds chiefly on orchard borers and
other tree insects and larvae. By nature he is friendly and cheerful but inclined to be a little
shy
