The city of Hilo is second only to Honolulu in size and importance. It is situated on the slope rising from a crescent shaped bay, with a fine sand beach, and presents a beautiful sight from the sea, with the palm fringed Cocoanut Island near the wharf and with the snow-capped summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in the background. The main portion of the city lies between two rivers. Wailea (south) and Wailuka (north). South of the Wailoa River is the Waiakea suburb, the headquarters of the fishing industry and the waterfront suburb while the principal residential quarter, Puueo lies to the north of Wailuku.
