NEW CLYDE LINE DOCKS, CHARLESTON, S. C.
Charleston was first settled at Albemarle Point, on
the West bank of the Ashley River, under Governor
William Seyle, in 1670, and called Charles Town, in
honor of the King. In 1672, for purposes of Commerce,
the settlement was moved to Oyster Point, formed by the
junction of the Ashley and the Cooper Rivers, and this
was called New Charles Town. The present city of
Charleston was incorporated in 1783.
