The slitting mill with two overshot water wheels at the
SAUGUS IRON WORKS. When this Ironworks was in
operation between 1646-1670 there were only twelve
slitting mills in the world. Here iron was converted to
flat straps and rods which were used by blacksmiths to
make nails, latches, and hinges for house building.
