Mentor Home of James Garfield James A.
Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was
born in Orange Township, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Nov. 19th,
1831. He was graduated from Williams College in 1856.
In 1858, he married Lucretia Randolph. Mentor was their
home except when his official duties called him elsewhere.
On July 2d, 1881, he was shot in the Baltimore and
Potomac Railway Depot at Washington, by Charles
Guiteau. He lingered until Sept. 19th, when he died at
Elberon, N.J., where he had been removed on Sept. 6th.
Garfield's remains rest in a beautiful monument in Lake
View Cemetery, Cleveland.
