The Sardine Fishery, of which Biarritz is a prominent
centre, is a flourishing industry off the south-west coast
of France. When the tide is too high to allow of entrance
to the small harbours built for the fishers' accommodation,
the boats are beached and women and boys go down and
fetch the catch which is lowered to them in baskets. The
women hawk the fish round the streets, their quaint cries
advising the townspeople of the arrival of a fresh supply
of these dainties.
