The swimming birds are easily caught by the feet and dragged below for alligators dinners. A few of the many kinds of birds that have made homes in the Ocklawaha Forest of great interest to the tourists are the Scarlet Flamingo, Sand-Hill Crane, King Fisher, Red Winged Spoonbill, Parquet, Pink Curlew and Whooping Crane. The last named when tamed, on hearing the noise of arrival of human acquaintance will utter its character- istic loon-like call and come as fast as wings will bring it. The Sand-Hill Crane is very large, about four feet tall and very easily tamed, its bright feathers are of robin's egg blue. Other birds have interesting char- (C) 1911 R. W. Thompson. acteristics.
