THE SUCCESS TWO MONTHS EARLIER OF A BALLOON AS-
CENSION WITH ANIMALS ABOARD LED TO APPROVAL BY KING
LOUIS XVI FOR TWO MEN TO ATTEMPT A SIMILAR FLIGHT. THIS
TIME THE MONTGOLIFIERE BROTHERS BUILT A LARGER
BALLOON TO CARRY THE TWO VOLUNTEERS, PILATRE DE
ROSIER AND THE MARQUIS D' ARLANDES.
DEPARTING FROM THE GARDEN OF THE KING'S CHATEAU
LAMUETTE ON NOVEMBER 21, 1783 THE BALLON WAS ESTI-
MATED TO HAVE RISEN TO ABOUT 3,000 FEET. THE FLIGHT
LASTED TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES, TERMINATING IN A FIELD
ABOUT 5 MILES DISTANT.
MAN HAD ACHIEVED HIS DREAM!
THIS CARD IS NO. II IN A SERIES ON THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT
OF LIGHTER-THAN-AIR CRAFT.
