IT WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE IN
1647. BEYOND IT, ON THE BANK
OF THE RIVER, STOOD THE SECOND
FORT, BUILT IN 1648, ITS EARTH-
WORKS WERE DEMOLISHED IN 1870.
