The Navaho Reservation in northern Arizona
is one of the largest in the United States and
contains about 16,000 Indians. The territory
covered by this reservation is extremely diver-
sified in character. In the country along and to
the north of the Little Colorado river are broad
valleys and rolling prairies, with mesas and buttes
rising up here and there, while east and north it
is very broken, with high table-lands and deep

the washes and in the canyons water is to be
found, and near such water are found the habita-
