THE ALASKA RAILROAD
was begun in 1915 and completed in the spring of 1923. The
railroad was constructed under the Act of March 12, 1914,
which empowered, authorized, and directed the President
to locate, construct, operate, or lease a railroad or railroads,
to connect the interior of Alaska with one or more of the
open navigable ports on the coast. About 500 miles of road
are in operation.
