The Manacle Rocks are among the most dreaded of the
many rocks and reefs which fringe the iron-bound Cornish
Coast. They are situated on the east of the Lizard penin-
sula opposite St. Keverne. Many fine ships have been lost
on these rocks, notable among which was the John
transport wrecked in May 1855, when nearly 200 lives were
sacrificed. There is a bell-buoy to warn passing ships.
