St. Paul's Cathedral is the central object and one
of the most prominent features of present-day London,
and stands at the top of LUDGATE HILL. Its massive
dome (the cross is 365 feet above the ground) towers
above all its surroundings, and gives an impression of
grandeur appropriate to the first ecclesiastical building
in England. The present edifice was begun by Sir
Christopher Wren in 1674, after the destruction of the
old building in the Great Fire of London, 1686.
