Erected in 1735 and served as headquarters for Lord Cornwallis and Lt. Col. Tarleton. Fierce battle fought here the 27th May 1862. Patrick Henry and Henry Clay were born near here. Machumps, brother-in-law of King Powhatan, also lived near here in 1610. Monument erected in honor of her Confederate Soldiers and of the noble women who loved them, 1861 - 65. |
