COLLETON COUNTY COURTHOUSE
Walterboro, S.C.
Building believed to have been designed by
the notable architect Robert Mills and built
in 1822. This county seat was gradually mov-
ed from Jacksonboro where a fire destroyed
over half of the homes in 1796. Walterboro
was first named Ireland Creek, but two citi-
zens, Walter and Smith, each insisted the
town be named for him. Dispute ended by
a tree-ſelling contest won by Walter.
