Named after Gen. Thomas Sumter of S. C..
became county seat Dec. 18, 1832. Only 1 year
before, 19,000 Choctaw Indians were forcefully
removed to the West. Visited by De Soto in
1540, later by de Bienville (Gov. of Louisiana
Province), Chief Pushmahata and Spanish In
north part of county is historic Fort Confeder-
ation (Tombeckbee), located near Eppes on Tom
